WEEK TEN

Hello, and welcome to week ten of the Off the Shelf bible reading plan. Last week we began a two-week study about Jesus’ life, death, resurrection, and ascension. The accounts we read last week and will read this week all come from the Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. These four books are ancient biographies that were written to explain who Jesus was, what he did, and what it means to follow him.

The first four days this week, we will read from the Gospel of John. Most scholars agree that the author of John was Jesus’ disciple named John. John’s gospel is the most unique of the four gospels. While Matthew, Mark, and Luke contain many of the same accounts and teachings, John’s gospel gives us additional glimpses into aspects of Jesus’ life that are not included in the other gospels. Our readings this week include John’s account of the week leading up to Jesus’ death and resurrection and his eventual ascension. The final day this week, we will read from the book of Matthew about Jesus’ final instructions to his disciples before ascending into Heaven.

DAY 1  |  Today we will read John 15-16. These two chapters contain some of Jesus’ final teachings before his death. Specifically, they include a passage where Jesus predicts his death and resurrection, and another passage that explains the coming of the Holy Spirit. To learn more about this today, read John 15-16. 

DAY 2  |  Today we will read John 18. This chapter contains John’s account of Jesus’ arrest and trial. Since there is only one chapter to read today, take time to read it slowly and consider what John wanted his readers to understand. Today, read John 18. 

DAY 3  |  Today we will read John 19. This chapter contains John’s account of Jesus’ death and burial. As with yesterday, take the time to read this chapter slowly and ponder its significance.  Today, read John 19. 

DAY 4  |  Today we will read John 20. This chapter contains John’s account of Jesus’ resurrection and the followers he appeared to after he rose from the grave. As with the previous two days, this chapter is incredibly significant, so take the time to read it slowly and think about the significance of Jesus’ resurrection. Today, read John 20. 

DAY 5  |  Today we will read Matthew 28. This chapter contains Matthew’s account of the resurrection and Jesus’ final instructions to his disciples before leaving earth. The last five verses, which contain these instructions, are often referred to as the Great Commission. As we close out this week’s reading, take some time to think through the importance of these words and what they mean for us today as well. Today, read Matthew 28.
